What is Guam’s Family Support 360° for Military Families?
Having a child with a disability presents unique challenges. For military families, these challenges often are even greater because of the nature of their situation which may include the following: adjusting to new living environments, the absence of the military spouse, separation from family, friends and support networks, and unfamiliarity with available military and local civilian resources.
Guam’s Family Support 360° for Military Families aims to serve as a guide to help family members identify and access the community supports to help meet these challenges and help them maximize the potential of their child with disabilities.
Project Goals
- Enhance the capabilities of military families to assist their children with disabilities to achieve their maximum potential;
- Support the increasing ability of military families to exercise greater choice and determination and to engage in leadership activities in their Guam and military communities; and
- Ensure the protection of the legal and human rights of military families of children with disabilities.
Program Features
- Family Support Navigators are experienced and trained peer to peer support persons who are assigned to assist military families of children with disabilities
- Interactive, skill building parent workshops and parent/sibling support groups
- Consultation and training for military and community programs on military culture, disabilities, inclusion practices, and other topics
- One Stop Center conveniently located at the University of Guam campus
- Community Partners consisting of parents, military organizations, and community resources
